The Caribbean is famous for it’s tropical rum drinks, and the Goombay Smash Cocktail is one of those drinks.
Although not as popular as a rum punch, rum runner , or pina colada it definitely deserves a place in your rum recipes lineup.
In doing some research on this drink, the following recipe seems to be as close to the original as I can find. Like all rum drinks, the recipe seems to change from bar to bar and from bar stool to bar stool.
Most tropical rum drinks have two things in common. Rum and fruit juice. Not all, but most. Sometimes there is a fine line between one recipe and another.
From the many Goombay Smash recipes I’ve encountered, the common denominators are dirty rum (dark), coconut rum or coconut cream (rum for me please), pineapple juice, orange juice and apricot brandy.
Optional recipes I’ve encountered include grenadine, various fruit liqueurs and/or a 051 floater . Personally, I haven’t gone with the floater, but it sounds excellent. The only problem with 051 floaters (in any drink) is they seem to make the evening go much quicker!
This Goombay Smash Cocktail is an easy drink to mix, and an easy drink to drink. Some rum drinks, especially blended, can keep a bartender mighty busy. The Smash is simple and it lets the host spend more time with the guests.
If you enjoy rum and tropical rum recipes, you should enjoy this.
If you do, please share it with your family and friends!
